Noisy boiler?
What each noise usually means, and what you can check yourself.
Kettling or rumbling
A sound like a kettle boiling usually means limescale or sludge in the heat exchanger. Water overheats in spots and steams. It is common in hard water areas like London. It needs an engineer to clean or flush the system, and a scale reducer helps stop it coming back.
Gurgling
Usually air in the system, or a partly frozen condensate pipe in cold weather. Bleed the radiators, then top up the pressure.
Banging or knocking
Can be air, low pressure, a pump running too fast or pipes expanding against joists. If it is loud and new, book a repair.
Whistling
Often low water flow, a blocked filter or kettling starting. Check the pressure first.
Humming or buzzing
Often the pump or fan. A new or louder hum is worth getting checked before the part fails.
Questions
Is a noisy boiler dangerous?
Usually not immediately, but noises are early warnings. Catching a failing pump or scale build-up early is cheaper than a breakdown.
Will a service fix a noisy boiler?
A service can find the cause. Clearing sludge or scale may need a system flush, which we will price for you.
