No heating or hot water?
Six quick checks that solve a surprising number of breakdowns.
Check these first
- Power. Is the display lit? Check the switch or fused spur next to the boiler and your fuse box.
- Thermostat and timer. Turn the thermostat up a few degrees and check the timer is on. Try the boost button.
- Pressure. If the gauge reads below 1 bar, top it up. See our pressure guide.
- Gas. Does your hob work? If you have a prepayment meter, does it have credit?
- Cold weather. Check the condensate pipe outside. See our frozen pipe guide.
- Fault code. Note the code and look it up. Reset once.
Heating but no hot water?
On a combi boiler, this often points to a diverter valve or a flow sensor. On a system or regular boiler, check the hot water timer and the cylinder thermostat. These usually need an engineer.
Hot water but no heating?
Check the thermostat and the heating timer. If both are right, the diverter valve, a zone valve or the pump may be stuck.
When to book
If none of the checks work, book a repair. With no heating or hot water, a priority visit gets an engineer to you within 4 hours, or the priority fee is refunded.
Questions
Is no hot water an emergency?
It can be for vulnerable people, babies or the elderly, especially in winter. Choose a priority visit and we aim to be with you within 2 hours.
Should I keep resetting my boiler?
No. Reset once. If it locks out again, something needs fixing, and repeated resets will not solve it.
